Jacaranda Workshop

BRIEF HISTORY

The Jacaranda Workshop was started in 1982 to provide training and employment to mentally handicapped adults graduating from the Jacaranda Special School. To date, the workshop has successfully managed to train and employ over 60 ex-jacaranda school graduates and assisted them to improve their self-esteem. The workshop seeks to provide employment to those who may find it difficult to find employment elsewhere. In some cases, the rightside column may not be needed. For example, if you want to publish long texts you may want to have longer text lines to enhance readability. This theme gives you the option to remove the right sidebar and resize the content column automatically!

AIMS OF THE WORKSHOP.

  1. Foster an enabling working environment for persons with mental handicap for their personal rehabilitation and employment.
  2. Assist them to be self-reliant, improve their self –esteem and human worth and integrate them into society.
  3. Enhance their capability and production skills
  4. Encourage economic independence of the handicapped artisans.

Our Clientele

The workshop is currently running due to the support in terms of orders coming from two export customers. These are

•  Ten thousand villages

This is a Mennonite Church organization from North America who buy handicrafts specifically from disadvantaged groups in the third world. They are part of the wider alternative trade organization who buy products in order to help alleviate poverty in the third world. Their orders have increased over the past three years by 50%.

•  The Body Shop International plc.

They have supported us over the years by buying body accessories mainly our popular brass hairpins. New designs in 2004 have helped increase our sales to Body Shop international by 20% this year.

We also sell our products locally through our show room right at the workshop. Occasionally, we do receive small orders locally, which have helped us so much especially in buying food & other miscellaneous expenses for the workshop
